Abstract

ABSTRACT A descriptive survey was carried out to assess the knowledge of adults regarding peptic ulcer in selected siyathalab area i.e ward 12 of Raichur, Karnataka conducted by Miss. Kalaiselvi.D in Navodaya college of Nursing, Raichur. This study was conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Sciences in Nursing in Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore. The objectives of the study were; • To assess the knowledge of adults who belongs to the age group of 25 to 45 years regarding peptic ulcer. • To identify the relationship between the knowledge of peptic ulcer with selected variables. • To develop health education module on peptic ulcer. The study was delimited to the selected siyathalab area of Raichur only and to the verbal statement of adults regarding peptic ulcer. Cluster sampling technique was used to select the study area. Simple random sampling technique was used to selected the sample. The sample size was 150 adults, consisting of both males and females equally. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analyzing the data. Findings related to sample characteristics were: • Half of the adults were in the age group of 25-30 years(50%). • More than one third of adults were illiterates (35.33%). • One fourth of adults were house wives (25%) and business people (25%). • More than two third of adults had monthly family income of below Rs. 2000/- (69.3%) • Among 150 adults nearly two third of adults were Hindus (65.3%) • More than half of the adults belonging to joint family (57.33%) • Sixteen percentage of adults were having the habits of tobacco chewing and smoking followed by alcoholism (12%) • One third of adults received health information from their friends and neighbours (34.66%). Findings related to knowledge of adults regarding peptic ulcer. • Only 3 adults had high knowledge(2%) and more than half of adults had average knowledge(54.66%) and 48.3 percentage of adults had low knowledge. • High knowledge was more among the sample whose age falls between 25 to 35 years (2%). • Females were having high knowledge (1.33%) when compared to males (0.66%). • Hindus were having high knowledge (1.33%) than Christians and Muslims. • High knowledge was more among the adults with the income group of Rs. 2001/- and above. • Significant relationship was found between knowledge of adults regarding peptic ulcer and total family monthly income and source of health information. • Significant relationship was not found between knowledge of adults regarding peptic ulcer with age, gender, education, occupation, religion, type of family, and habits. The following conclusions were made. More than half of the adults were having average knowledge about peptic ulcer (54.66%). 43.3 percentage of adults were having low knowledge regarding peptic ulcer (43.3%). Very few adults were having high knowledge about peptic ulcer (2%). Based on the results the following recommendations can be made: • A study can be conducted on larger sample to arrive/to draw generalization regarding peptic ulcer. • A comparative study can be conducted between rural and urban adults. • Teaching and demonstration materials can be videotaped, encouraged in the outpatient departments and wards of the hospitals. • Individual teaching can be given during counseling. • Health information regarding peptic ulcer can be given to others through the talks, classes, articles, radio talks, pamphlets and television programmes. Based on the results the following implications can be made: The implications are given on various aspects like nursing practice, nursing administration, nursing education and nursing research. 1. Nursing practice Nurse can create a better awareness of topics like peptic ulcer among adults. Variety of audiovisual aids can be used to impact adequate knowledge. The present study has proved that the nurses have to take intensive efforts to organize education campaigns to enhance knowledge regarding peptic ulcer. Nurses can do survey to identify the cases and do follow up services. 2. Nursing administration Nursing/health administrators should conduct the public awareness about the peptic ulcer disease. In service education and continuing nursing education training programmes to be initiated for nurses to update the knowledge regarding peptic ulcer. More information in the form of booklets, pamphlets and handouts should be given for peptic ulcer patients as well as general public. 3. Nursing education The knowledge of the health professionals can be improved by conducting in service education in the curriculum to update the nurses knowledge. The nurse educators can play a vital role in health education of community regarding peptic ulcer. They can plan for varied teaching methodologies eg: role plays, street plays and different assignments to the nursing students regarding peptic ulcer in conducting health education campaigns. 4. Nursing research A more extensive study on a larger sample should be conducted to arrive/to draw generalization regarding peptic ulcer. The Investigator felt the need for conducting an experimental study in various aspects of peptic ulcer disease. Research should be conducted to assess the knowledge about peptic ulcer in various age groups. A study may be conducted to see the prevalence of peptic ulcer.
