Abstract|ملخص البحث

Tubular parts are important in many industrial applications (e.g. joints, fitting, etc.). The internal surface quality plays an important role in the part performance. Burnishing is a cold working surface treatment process which has been widely used to product excellent surface finish by plastically deforming the work piece surface layer and to improve the surface characteristics. In this study, a simple internal burnishing tool is designed and fabricated to perform ball burnishing process using lathe machine on internal ring of steel work piece. The influence of the main burnishing parameters on the average surface roughness and the average root mean square roughness were studied. All workpieces machined at a constant conditions and the initial roughness of about in the range of 5.5 to 6.4 µm. The results show that all specimens could be finished to a roughness average of about in range of 0.9 to 1.7µm. The Taguchi technique is employed to identify the effect of the burnishing parameter on output responses, namely: average surface roughness (Ra) and average root mean square roughness (Rq). It was concluded that feed rate is the most significant parameter affecting on average surface roughness and average root mean square roughness followed by speed, then depth of penetration. The optimum burnishing performance for arithmetic mean value of roughness (Ra), and the average root mean square roughness (Rq) were obtained at burnishing speed of (125 m/min), feed of (0.08mm/rev) and depth of penetration of (0.1 mm).
