KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDE OF RURAL ADULTS REGARDING TOBACCO CHEWING AT PAKWARA, MORADABAD, NORTHERN INDIA. MRS.KALAISELVI, PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR, LECTURER, MR.JAIJO, CO-INVESTIGATOR, NURSING TUTOR. BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY: Tobacco is an addictive substance because it contains the chemical nicotine. It causes the brain to release adrenaline, creating a buzz of pleasure and energy. Chewing tobacco is known to be strongly associated with a number of major health problems, including oral cancer, high blood pressure, gum disease, reduced sperm count, and erectile dysfunction. The World Health Organization predicts that tobacco deaths in India may exceed 1.5 million annually by 2020. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. In this study 500 adults were selected by convenience sampling method from Pakwara area of Moradabad, UP, India. The data were collected from Dec 2014 to Jan 2015 by using structured interview schedule. RESULTS: Majority of the adults had low knowledge regarding tobacco chewing. Whereas nearly a quarter of subjects had average knowledge. Shockingly no one of them had high knowledge regarding tobacco chewing. Only about 5% of subjects were having highly favorable attitude whereas nearly a third of adults had moderately favorable attitude and approximately two third of adults had unfavorable attitude towards tobacco chewing. There is no significant association between knowledge of adults regarding tobacco chewing and their socio demographic variables except with dietary pattern. The result interprets that variables like knowledge and attitude is having a weak positive correlation. Key words: Tobacco Chewing, Rural Adults, Knowledge, Attitude
